Faith-Based Treatment

Addiction to drugs and alcohol is a problem that affects millions of Americans every year, even those who have strong feelings of religious faith. Both in Montana and throughout the country, people of faith struggle with elements of stress in their lives that lead them to dangerous patterns of substance abuse.

Fortunately, rehab centers in Montana offer faith-based treatment options for drug and alcohol addiction. These programs emphasize the role of religious and spiritual faith in the patient’s recovery and aim at providing the patient with the tools to achieve long-term recovery.

How does Faith-Based Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Work?

Faith-based programs of addiction rehab use many of the same tools and methods as do general programs of treatment. However, faith-based programs focus upon the power of religious faith and the centrality of faith in the life of the patient. These aspects of the patient’s life can help him break his addiction and achieve permanent sobriety.

The first step of drug rehabilitation is detoxification, during which the patient’s physical dependence upon drugs or alcohol is broken. Detox is also designed to treat the patient for withdrawal symptoms that may be painful or dangerous to his health. Following detox, the patient is required to attend courses of therapy. These may include group therapy sessions led by trained counselors or one-on-one counseling sessions. The use of cognitive behavioral therapy is common in drug treatment programs. CBT is designed to help the patient recognize aspects of his life that cause him stress and that may contribute to his drug or alcohol abuse habit. CBT is designed to teach the patient new and healthy methods of dealing with stress, anger, and grief that do not involve drug or alcohol abuse.

Faith-based programs use the above methods of treatment but include elements of scriptural study, prayer, and meditation. Group Bible study and discussion sessions are commonly held in faith-based rehab programs. These sessions give the patient the opportunity to make connections with fellow recovering drug and alcohol addicts who share his sense of religious faith, and the bonds formed as a result can help the patient increase his resolve to recover from his addiction.

Individual forms of religious counseling and of prayer and meditation are also generally offered, however. These give the patient the time and space needed to allow him to reflect upon his life, the role that faith plays in it, and how achieving sobriety can help him live a better life.

Twelve-Step Recovery and its Role in a Faith-Based Aftercare Plan

Aftercare is necessary to help the patient remain sober after rehab and avoid the danger of a relapse into previous patterns of substance abuse. The 12-step program is perhaps the most effective form of aftercare for recovering drug and alcohol abusers of faith. The very first 12-step program, Alcoholics Anonymous, includes religious and spiritual elements in its 12 tenets. These include the member’s acknowledgment of a higher power and commitment to place recovery into the hands of that higher power. Many other 12-step programs that followed AA include similar faith-based elements in their philosophies.

AA and most other twelve-step programs are not expressly Christian in nature, but they provide an excellent forum for people both of Christian and other forms of religious faith to connect and to share experiences related to drug and alcohol addiction and recovery. The meetings, which are organized by 12-step programs to bring together recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, provide members with a supportive and understanding place in which to make new friends and strengthen their resolve to remain sober. Many recovering substance abusers continue to attend 12-step program meetings for years and decades following their release from rehab.

A faith-based recovery program is an effective treatment option for Christians and other people of faith who want to achieve sobriety.
